This is what I don’t like about Instagram

Yes, you see it right, there are somethings I don’t like about Instagram. And don’t get me wrong, I love Instagram. It is one of my favorite platforms specially since they launched Instagram stories and a lot of new features. I’ve been using Instagram for the last 4 years and I’ve seen the platform changing for a place to share pictures to a real marketing machine. And although I love the platform, there are a couple of things I don’t like about Instagram, sorry!

Followers

Yes I know what you think, followers are not the most important part of social media and I 100% agree with you. But hard works needs to pay of right? What I don’t like about Instagram is that followers come and go really easy. As I’ve said, I’ve been using Instagram for 4 years now and although I’ve not always been as consistent as I should, the lasts year I’ve been putting a lot of effort in to my Instagram account. It took me a lot of work to get 1000 followers. A lot of interactions, content planning and time. You might think, this is the same on other social media profiles but I don’t agree on this. When I run out of time to interact on Instagram or the share a picture I loose easily 25-30 followers in 1 day! This means to me that Instagram has a lot of fake profiles. Or people who use Instagram in the wrong way; they follow and than unfollow a lot of people to grow their follower base. I think Instagram is worse than other social media channels, that’s why I stopped focusing on followers. And yes sometimes I get 20 new followers per day and sometimes I loose 30 followers per day, for me that’s part of Instagram. (but still annoying ;-))

Fake comments

I get a lot of fake comments on my pictures. Comments like; Do you want more followers? Do you want to do business with me? I always report these as spam but it seems to be an endless process. It is too bad for the platform that there are so many bot accounts that place those in relevant comments and it makes the platform less interesting sometimes.. In my opinion this only happens on the Instagram platform. Sometimes I get comments on other platforms that look very spamming but Instagram seem to have a consistent spam comment flow.

Showing the good life

Although Instagram introduced Instagram stories, Instagram is still the platform to show of you good and amazing life. I’m guilty as well, scrolling thru my timeline being jealous of all those girls who share perfect pictures. Most of those pictures are made by professional photographers or made on amazing locations. So you might think, what’s the problem? Well, it feels like Instagram is the place to get insecure about your own life. Instagrammers with thousands of followers seem to live amazing lives. Hanging out at trendy spots and always eating the perfect food. What I don’t like about Instagram is that you don’t see the real life of those Instagrammers. I’m pretty sure nobodies life is perfect ;-). I think Instagram tries to make the platform more personal with live video which helps, but for me, it stays the platform with too many perfect lives.

Posting with your phone

Yes this is something I don’t really like, you can only post on Instagram with your mobile phone. The app works perfectly fine on mobile phones but not great at a laptop or computer. Maybe not a big issue but a lot of social media channels do work on laptop and mobile phone. I would be surprised if Facebook (owner of Instagram) would change this about the Instagram platform but we will see…

Don’t get me wrong, I love Instagram as I mentioned before. Instagram is inspiring, creative and I think the live video features is very powerful for businesses and individuals. And, I can’t image life without Instagram anymore πŸ™‚

  1. I agree with the piece on comments! I was an ‘early adopter’ on IG but stopped using it temporarily after FB bought it. I think it’s a fun app but probably one that’s more effective with a slightly smaller network (which most social media folk may disagree with!)

  2. I love Instagram, it’s definitely my favourite social platform to use personally – but I do agree with you Wendy, you only see the ‘good life’ with the highly filtered photos. I think the with the videos you now get an insight into day to day ‘real’ lives. But as a lover of fashion and food it’s great to follow bloggers, steal their style and good recipes πŸ™‚
