Profile pictures, a lot of people don’t spend much time on selecting these. And even if they did spend some time on their profile picture they don’t seem to update their picture. This means people have profile pictures from when they were years younger. Other people use very creative profile pictures, like pictures with their family, kids, dogs, a glass of wine… These images are often unclear and don’t look very professional. But why is your profile picture so important and why should you spend some time on picking the right pictures for your profiles?
Let me start with explaining what a good profile picture is. A good picture, is a picture where people can see your head and shoulders, taken from the front and of course a nice smile. A clear background makes it easier for people to see your face without loosing attention. I don’t believe in company logo’s in profile pictures. Your profiles are part of your online personal brand. The company you work for is only part of your brand so there is no need to have the logo in your profile picture. Make sure you use a high resolution picture so when people click in to your picture, the picture is still sharp.
It is really important that people recognize you from your profile picture when they meet you face to face. From my own experience I know people can look completely different when I check their profile before I meet them face to face. But this is not the only reason why it is important that people recognize you from your profile picture. When you use your profiles for Social Selling or to find your dream job it is important that people can see your face. The more professional and clear your picture is, the faster people take you seriously and the more willing they are to engage with you. People prefer to engage with people. Think about your own experience, would you prefer to connect with somebody with a very unclear picture and you don’t really know what the person looks like or with somebody who has a big smile on their face and is very easy to recognize in real life?
Make sure when you pick a profile picture, you use this picture across all platforms you use for Social Selling. This makes it easier for people to make sure that they found your profiles. For example, when you connect with somebody on LinkedIn, you may search for their Twitter handle and you want to make sure you find the right person on Twitter. The same profile picture can be extremely helpful!
Of course I would love to hear from you, do you have a professional profile picture on your Social Media profiles?
With love, from Dublin..
